Understanding AGN - Host Connection in Partially Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei . Part I : The Nature of AGN + HII Composites

چکیده
The goal of our serial papers is to examine the evolutionary connection between AGN and star formation in its host galaxy in the partially obscured AGNs (i.e., Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies). Taking advantage of these galaxies, the properties of both components can be studied together by direct measurements. In this paper, we focus on the broad-line composite galaxies (composite AGNs) which are located between the theoretical and empirical separation lines in the [N II]/Hα vs. [O III]/Hβ diagram. These galaxies are searched for from the composite galaxies provided by the SDSS DR4 MPA/JHU catalogs. After re-analyze the spectra, we perform a fine classification for the 85 composite AGNs in terms of the BPT diagrams. All the objects located below the three theoretical separation lines are associated with a young stellar population (<1Gyrs), while either a young or old stellar population is identified in the individual multiply-classified object. The multiply-classified objects with a very old stellar population are located in the LINER region in the [O I]/Hα vs. [O III]/Hβ diagram. We then consider the connection between AGN and star formation to derive the key results. The Eddington ratio inferred from the broad Hα emission, the age of the stellar population of AGN's host as assessed by D n (4000), and the line ratio [O I]/Hα are found to be related with each other. These relations strongly support the evolutionary scenario in which AGNs evolve from high L/L Edd state with soft spectrum to low L/L Edd state with hard spectrum as young stellar population ages and fades. The significant correlation between the line ratio [O I]/Hα and D n (4000) leads us to suggest that the line ratio could be used to trace the age of stellar population in type I AGNs.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملMid-infrared diagnostics to distinguish AGNs from starbursts
We present new mid-infrared (MIR) diagnostics to distinguish emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from that originating in starburst regions. Our method uses empirical spectroscopic criteria based on the fact that MIR emission from star forming or active galaxies arises mostly from HII regions, photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) and AGNs. The analysis of the strength of the 6.2 μm Unidentifi...
متن کاملLow-luminosity Agn and Normal Galaxies
Low-luminosity AGN (with LX < 1 × 10 42 ergs s) far outnumber ordinary AGN, and are therefore perhaps more relevant to our understanding of AGN phenomena and the relationship between AGN and host galaxies. Many normal galaxies harbor LINER and starburst nuclei, which, together with LLAGN, are a class of “low-activity” galaxies that have a number of surprisingly similar X-ray characteristics, de...
متن کاملHigh Energy Emission from Agn and Unified Schemes
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are now known to be strong γ-ray emitters. After briefly describing AGN classification and the main ideas behind unified schemes, I summarize the main properties of blazars (that is BL Lacs and flatspectrum radio quasars) and their connection with relativistic beaming. Finally, I address the question of why blazars, despite being extreme and very rare objects, are t...
متن کاملA Panchromatic View of Agn
We review the continuum emission of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. After a brief historical introduction, we describe the main spectral properties of unobscured AGN, discussing the selection biases which prevent us from having a complete view of the AGN population in the universe, and trying to build an updated spectral energy distribution of optically se...
